Wales Sees Zero Weekly Deaths From Coronavirus For First Time Since Pandemic Began

June 29, 2021

Wales has reported a week with zero deaths from COVID-19 for the first time since the pandemic began, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has said.

A total of 102 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 18 June mentioned coronavirus on the death certificate, according to the ONS - up 21% on the previous week.

It is the first time the number of deaths has been above 100 since the week ending 21 May.

All of the 102 deaths were registered in England.

None of the 573 deaths registered in Wales in the week ending 18 June mentioned COVID-19 on the death certificate, according to the ONS.

The last time this happened was in the week ending 13 March 2020.

The following week, to 20 March, saw two COVID-19 deaths registered in Wales.

Since then, there have been deaths involving the virus registered in Wales every week.

The number peaked at 413 during the first wave of the virus, in the week to 24 April 2020, and at 467 during the second wave, in the week to 15 January.

The latest figures suggest a different trend in England.

The 102 deaths in the week to 18 June was up from 83 the previous week.

This is still a very low level compared with the peak of the first and second waves of the virus, however.`
