December 17, 2021

.Tiktok and Twitter Also Fined
The Russian government has fined Facebook's parent company Meta Platforms 13 million Rubles ($176,280) for not responding to the government's request to delete content it deems illegal a Moscow Court said on Thursday. This ruling comes as the latest of the Russian government's penalties against big technology companies.

Russia has ramped up its efforts to regulate big tech this year in a move that critics are saying is a ploy by the Russian government to exercise more control over the internet thereby limiting individual freedom. The Vladimir Putin administration in Russia has long been criticised by the Western Media as an authoritarian government.

Meanwhile, in two other separate cases, Russia has also fined Twitter and Tiktok for not deleting sensitive materials after requests by the Russian government. Twitter was slapped with a 10 million Rubles ($135,600)  fine across two cases, while Tiktok was fined 4 million Rubles (54,240) for refusing to delete content according to a report by Reuters

I
n another development, Russia's communications regulator, Roskomnadzor said that the government has slowed down Twitter's speed as a punishment for the social media platform not taking action on posts that contained child pornography as well as those encouraging drug abuse, suicide and calls for minors to commit suicide.
