Toshiba Halts Operations At Japan Chip Plant After Earthquake

Toshiba has announced that it has temporarily stopped operations at its Oita, Southern Japan plant after the strong earthquake that hit Southern Japan over the weekend, Metro News can confirm. 

You will recall that we reported an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 hitting the Southern Japan region on Saturday, injuring 13 people in the process.

The Toshiba plant in Oita is responsible for making semiconductors that are used in cars and industrial machinery. Additionally, it makes system LSI chips which it sells 60% off to industrial machine makers and carmakers.

According to Toshiba, the earthquake damaged some equipment, although the impact of the damage to production could not be ascertained at the time of writing this story.

A company spokesperson said that the company does not yet know when production can restart, but says they will probably have an update on Tuesday.
