Procrastination: A Clog In The Wheel Of Your Business and Career Progress

April 12, 2022

Humans are wired by neurones and reflexes—at an instant, there’s a sudden rush of emotions to get something done, and the next instant, this wave of emotions suddenly dies down and we find ourselves doing something almost entirely different from what we intended to do from the beginning, perhaps towards something that seems “easier and simpler,” to borrow the words of Lyn Christian.

This is what procrastination entails. It’s our brains’ way of avoiding “mental burnout,” a way of “stress relief”, according to Mel Robbins. And who says we’ve not all been guilty of this at one time or the other in our business or career endeavours.

Essentially, we must make peace with this fact: The business and career space aren’t waiting for you! We must accept that this is one of the greatest inhibitors of growth and development. Joseph R. Ferrari, a foremost researcher in this regard, defines procrastination as a self-sabotaging tendency. And I beg to agree for the following reasons:

It promotes demotivating psychological tendencies such as fear of failure, anxiety, low self-esteem
These feelings are negative and unproductive when it comes to inventing products or taking that new career leap; the minute you start to delay doing something productive, you only feed these emotional defaults and, finally, nothing gets done or things get done badly. And one delay after another, your sense of self and worth drop drastically. And it is often a great challenge to revive a broken self-image, almost impossible!

The world will move and leave you behind
Our present world is a vastly competitive space, such that one economy is only trying to outdo another. This is more so in the light of entrepreneurial start-up and career progress—people are dishing out creative and innovative ideas every day, and the tendency is that you could be among the few procrastinators who will not follow their ideas through to implementation.

Being a procrastinator, you make the job of others more difficult
An employee who is known to often procrastinate stands the chance of losing the faith of fellow workers, who may get pained from work overload to the point of turning on the lagging employer.

Leads to the production of mediocre products and services
A business owner who puts off working on a product, rebranding or putting out a new product to a later time stands a high chance of having to do what needs to be done hurriedly in a bid to meet up a deadline, hence making loads of mistakes and putting out a self-deprecating product. This ultimately leads to;

Losing the confidence and trust of clients
What do we say of a brand with a truckload of dissatisfied and disgruntled clientele?

Poor learning performance
To grow, one needs to consistently learn and boost the intellectual prowess required for that desirable career path or business endeavour. Feeding your procrastinating tendencies, to take up that new course or engage in that training, can be detrimental to your career leap or continuity.
