January 30, 2024

At least 1,500 staff members of the Central Bank of Nigeria are scheduled to resume work at its Lagos office this Friday, following their redeployment from the headquarters, as per exclusive information obtained by The PUNCH.

A source within the apex bank revealed that despite facing criticism, the relocation plan is still in motion, and the affected staff members are expected to resume their duties on February 2, marking the first week of the upcoming month.

The decision to relocate some of the CBN's departments to Lagos is part of the new management's strategy to prioritize staff safety, enhance productivity, and alleviate congestion at the head office.

This recent development underscores the ongoing efforts to streamline operations and create a conducive working environment for the Central Bank of Nigeria's workforce.

The CBN stated that the relocation was prompted by various factors, including the necessity to align the bank's structure with its functions and objectives. Another driving factor was the redistribution of skills to ensure a more equitable geographical spread of talent within the organization.

In addition, the move was deemed necessary to comply with building regulations, echoing warnings from the facility manager and recommendations from the Committee on Decongestion of the CBN Head Office. These factors collectively contributed to the decision to implement the relocation strategy.

A memo circulated to staff conveyed the initiation of a decongestion action plan at the CBN Head Office. The objective of this plan is to optimize the operational environment of the bank, indicating a commitment to efficiency and improved working conditions for the staff.

This development underscores the strategic efforts undertaken by the CBN to enhance its organizational structure, compliance, and overall operational effectiveness in line with its functions and objectives.

This initiative aims to ensure compliance with building safety standards and enhance the efficient utilisation of our office space.”

According to reports, the departments penciled down for relocation by the CBN governor Yemi Cardoso include Banking Supervision, Other Financial Institutions Supervision, Consumer Protection Department, Payment System Management Department, and Financial Policy Regulations Department.
